How to make Christmas Rock Candy!

In this video, Sarah is showing us how to make Christmas Rock Candy, with science!

Here is what you need:
???? Cups
???? 3 cups of sugar
???? 1 cup of water
???? Food colouring (red and green)
???? Popsicle sticks or wooden skewers
???? Wooden clothespins

Mix the water and sugar together in a pot over a medium heat. Once the sugar starts to dissolve, set aside to cool. Put some sugar on a plate. Soak the skewers in water and then roll them in the sugar. Set aside to dry completely. Pour the sugar-water solution into cups. Mix in some food colouring. Attach 2 clothespins together and stick the dried sugar skewer in the middle. Place this in the sugar water, making sure the skewer isn’t touching the bottom or the sides of the glass. Set aside for a week and watch them grow!

✨What’s the Science✨
At the start of this experiment, the sugar and water solution that you make should look a little cloudy. This is because you are creating what is known as a supersaturated solution which contains more solute (sugar) than can be dissolved in the water! As the temperature of the solution cools, the sugar which cannot dissolve begins to crystallize. These crystals can then bind to any surface where sugar is present, in this case the wooden skewers. You want to ensure the wooden stick isn’t touching the side of the bottom of the glass to ensure the sugar crystals only form on the stick and not on the glass. After about a week the crystals get big enough to visualise! Enjoy ????!
